Commentary on Legal Roles and Remuneration in Ireland for 2018

Legal support talent will remain in high demand in 2018. Top legal firms have become more flexible when hiring for legal PAs with an increasing number being open to hiring professionals from non-legal backgrounds. Conveyancing and litigation is the most in-demand experience currently.

Another notable development has been the transition of the traditionally-known job title of legal secretary to that of legal personal assistants (PAs) across the top firms.  In comparison, small to medium-sized firms continue to focus on recruiting traditional legal secretaries with demand for strong typing and document management skills remaining a top priority. These firms seek professionals with experience within specific areas of law and tend to be rigid on those parameters.

In light of the shortage of available talent, firms are hiring junior legal administrators, receptionists and secretaries with legal secretarial qualifications with an eye towards up-skilling these employees to legal secretaries. This pool of junior job seekers look for visibility to the career progression that will be open to them and what training they will be able to avail of.

Salaries and benefits, even at the larger law firms, continue to lag behind those in other industries. Legal support professionals are motivated primarily by two factors – salary and a positive culture. Many firms are starting to realise they will need to adjust their salary levels if they are to attract and retain the more financially motivated and higher-qualified job seekers in 2018.
