5 ways to stay motivated during your job search

Sharon O'Donnell - 04/06/2018

The longer you are on the look for a new role, the harder it can be to stay committed to the process. It is imperative that you remain motivated and focused on the end goal in order to secure your dream job.

1. Keep your goals at the front of your mind

Even if you need to stick a post-it to the fridge or recite your goals out loud each morning, it is important to remember why you are investing so much time and effort in your job search! Remind yourself of all the positives that will eventually come about if you focus on your end goal.

2. Break your goals down

What are your long-term career goal? What short-term objectives do you need to focus on in order to achieve your overall aspirations?

Something as big as wanting to be the CEO of a multi-national company is a pretty big goal to set yourself on a Monday morning! Figure out which smaller, short-term targets you will need to achieve to be on track in reaching your ultimate objective and put together a strategy that will help you to reach them.

3. The old cliché: learn from the bad stuff

It can seem like the hardest thing in the world to do when you are feeling defeated. Learning from your mistakes is paramount so be sure to ask for negative feedback. It can be difficult to hear, but it is important to identify areas that you can improve on. The list of things you can learn from bad interview experiences is endless, so take any feedback you can get and use it to improve your interview performance.

If you are experiencing a lack of response to your CV, think about why this might be. Make sure that your CV is tailored for each role you apply for, highlighting your experience that is relevant to the specific job.

4. Stay active in the employment market

If you’re not in, you can’t win!

If you are continually on the receiving end of negative feedback, you might begin to feel that you will never find a suitable role. Don’t let rejection put you off applying for other roles. The one job you don’t bother applying for could be the perfect one that will change your life!

5. Stay positive

Although it can be difficult to keep trying when you are feeling a little defeated, it is very important to remain optimistic. Don’t beat yourself up about it if you don’t secure the first job you apply for. Keep a positive attitude, as this will come across in interview.
