Irish professional jobs rose 5% in April 12 compared to April 11

Highlights

  • The Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor recorded a decrease (4%) in the number of new professional jobs in April 12 compared to March 12
  • However, the number of new professional job vacancies was up 5% year-on-year from April 11
  • April 12 saw a 15% decrease since March in the number of professionals seeking jobs in the Irish employment market
  • Compared to the same time last year there was a significant increase of (63%) in the number of new professional job seekers in April 12.

 

The number of new professional job opportunities decreased slightly from March 12 to April 12, according to the latest Morgan McKinley Irish Employment Monitor. There was a 4% decrease from 9,246 in March 12 to 8,919 in April 12. This was however, a marginal increase (5%) from the April 11 figure of 8,533.

There was also a decline in the number of professionals beginning their job searches in April 12, decreasing 15% from 12,200 to 10,390 month-on-month. Compared to April 11, there was a 63% increase when 6,375 professionals entered the jobs market.

Karen O’Flaherty, Chief Operations Officer, Morgan McKinley commented:

“Professional job opportunities saw a small month-on-month decline in April 12. This reduction is likely to be a reaction to the ongoing economic domestic uncertainty coupled with the recent European updates of double dip recession. Seasonally it is also typical to expect protracted decision making around the Easter and holiday period.

Amidst the gloomy economic setting, we are seeing scattered pockets of hiring within the pharmaceutical, manufacturing and IT sectors namely Amgen, Mylan and Cisco. Positively, professionals are becoming more mobile and flexible in looking for alternative employment and employers are more conscious of the need to offer attractive and enticing remuneration packages to secure this talent.

April 12 saw a 15% decrease in professionals emerging in to the Irish jobs market. This can be largely attributed to the reduced momentum over the Easter period. The surge of 63% compared to April 11 is a positive sign that passive job seekers are now beginning to explore the jobs market.

The recent amendments to the draft AWD (Agency Workers Directive) bill, is welcome news for contract and temporary workers in Ireland. We hope that this legislation when enacted, will alleviate the uncertainty and concerns around potential hiring by employers and will not stunt job growth in Ireland in the coming months.”

The data is based on new job vacancies and new candidates registered with Morgan McKinley’s network of Irish offices in Cork, Dublin, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford.
